Trading from home has become very easy and cheap to setup. Most notably, the success of the free trading terminal software from Metatrader has helped to enable small new brokers (mostly forex), to setup cost effective data-centres and provide service to retail traders at competitive (and not so competitive) rates. But all is not as it seems at first. There are many pitfalls waiting for the novice forex trader. Not least the idea that a novice can trade profitably within a few weeks or even days of setting up.
Perhaps more dangerous still is the notion that a $97 robot (or EA in MT4/5 parlance), can make profits whilst you sleep, or turn you into a multi-millionaire within a few years. The old addage "if it seems to good to be true, it probably is", simply doesn't seem to carry much weight in this market. But it really should. I doubt if I have even seen a market niche filled with so many lies and unbelievable rags-to-riches stories as this one. In a way it is partly the sheer abundance of snake-oil selling, combined with the truly breathtaking scale of the lies in the ads that makes it as fascinating as it is.
If you want to go FX trading, you need to know some basics before you begin. After all, it would take you at least 18 months to become a plumber with some basic skills that could earn you $50k. How long do you think it will take to learn to become a competent traders with some basic skills, that could earn you whatever you like?
The realities of life are such that learning to trade is not the same as learning to trade profitably. Neither of these are the same as learning to trade consistently profitably. Doing the last will take you about 3 years of full time work. Maybe less if you are really bright, highly motivated and prepared to give up a social life for a couple of years. Once you have read a couple of decent books (visit my blog to get a list of really useful books), and traded demo accounts for a few months, you will probably feel as though you can trade. But trust me on this - you do not know how to trade consistently and profitably until you know how to deal with your losses. The lessons that will teach you this can come in many flavours, all of which are extremely bitter. Fortunately - at least for those of you that are aware of the need - there are some excellent resources on the net, as well as some brilliant books, that will help you educate yourself in trading methods and systems. But the bottom line is that you can learn all the techniques and methods of analysis and trading from all manner of resources. But the only one who can teach you to trade consistently and profitably is you.
